There are today many co-operative societies spread throughout the UK, each with their own retail trading area, their own Board of Directors and Society membership.

Whilst most national retailers exist mainly to maximise profits for shareholders, with co-operative societies all profits produce direct benefits for their primary stakeholders, ie. the society’s members, customers, employees and their local communities – something national retailers are unable to do.
